Oral Wegovy® Tablets vs Weight Loss Injections

At Redwood Pharmacy, we offer medically supported weight-management treatments, including injectable options such as Wegovy® and Mounjaro®, and now oral Wegovy® tablets.

Many patients ask whether they should switch from injections to tablets. The answer depends on your current treatment, your response, your side effects, and your personal preference.

What is oral Wegovy®?

Oral Wegovy® contains semaglutide, the same active medicine family used in Wegovy® injections. It is taken as a once-daily tablet to support weight loss and weight maintenance, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

How do you take oral Wegovy®?

Oral Wegovy® must be taken very carefully for it to work properly:

  • Take once daily on an empty stomach
  • Take after at least 8 hours fasting
  • Swallow whole with a small amount of water, up to 120 mL
  • Do not crush, split, or chew
  • Wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking, or taking other medicines

Taking it with food, too much water, or other tablets too soon can reduce absorption. Tiny tablet, diva behaviour.

Is oral Wegovy® better than injections?

Not necessarily.

For many patients already doing well on Wegovy® injections or Mounjaro® injections, staying on the injection may be the better option. Weekly injections are often simpler, more predictable, and do not require daily fasting rules.

Oral Wegovy® may be helpful for patients who:

  • dislike injections
  • have needle anxiety
  • have injection-site reactions
  • prefer a daily tablet
  • travel frequently
  • cannot access injections due to supply issues

Switching from Wegovy® injections to oral Wegovy®

Patients using Wegovy® 2.4 mg once weekly may be able to switch to oral Wegovy® 25 mg once daily, starting one week after the last injection.

There is no simple approved conversion table for lower Wegovy® injection doses such as 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1 mg, or 1.7 mg. These cases need individual assessment.

Switching from Mounjaro® to oral Wegovy®

Mounjaro® contains tirzepatide, which is a different medicine from semaglutide. Many patients find Mounjaro® very effective for appetite control and weight loss.

If switching from Mounjaro® to oral Wegovy®, our PGD guidance requires a 7-day washout period after the last Mounjaro® injection. If side effects have settled, treatment usually starts at the lowest oral Wegovy® dose: 1.5 mg once daily.

Patients switching from higher-dose Mounjaro® may notice reduced appetite suppression at first.

Oral Wegovy® dose schedule

The usual dose escalation is:

MonthDose
Month 11.5 mg once daily
Month 24 mg once daily
Month 39 mg once daily
Month 4 onwards25 mg once daily

The dose may be kept lower for longer if needed because of side effects.

Who may not be suitable?

Oral Wegovy® may not be suitable if you:

  • are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • are planning pregnancy soon
  • have type 1 diabetes
  • have pancreatitis
  • have severe kidney or liver impairment
  • have a known eating disorder
  • are already using another weight-loss medicine
  • have certain medication interactions or medical conditions

A full consultation is required before supply.

Common side effects

Common side effects may include:

  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • diarrhoea
  • constipation
  • indigestion
  • abdominal pain
  • headache
  • tiredness

Patients should seek medical advice urgently if they develop severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, signs of dehydration, or symptoms suggestive of pancreatitis.

Our advice

Oral Wegovy® is a useful new option, especially for patients who prefer tablets or cannot tolerate injections.

However, it is not automatically “better” than Wegovy® or Mounjaro® injections. For patients already doing very well on injections, switching may not be beneficial.

At Redwood Pharmacy, we will help you choose the most appropriate option based on your weight-loss goals, medical history, current treatment, lifestyle, and preferences.
