Emergency Hormonal Contraceptives-Free on NHS Service
Free Emergency Contraception (Morning-After Pill) at Redwood Pharmacy
The morning after pill, also known as emergency hormonal contraception (EHC), can help prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure. It’s most effective when taken as soon as possible after intercourse.
At Redwood Pharmacy, we offer a confidential emergency contraception service with no appointment necessary. One of our trained pharmacists will carry out a short, private consultation to determine if the treatment is suitable for you.
The emergency contraceptive pill is now free on the NHS at participating pharmacies — including ours.
What Is the Morning After Pill?
1. Levonelle One-Step
- Most effective when taken within 72 hours (3 days) of unprotected sex
- Works best the sooner it's taken
2. ellaOne
- Can be taken up to 120 hours (5 days) after unprotected sex
- Remains highly effective throughout the 5-day window
The pharmacist will advise you on the most suitable option based on how much time has passed and your medical history.
What to Expect During the Consultation
- Complete a short, confidential questionnaire
- Discuss your answers with the pharmacist in a private consultation room
- Receive the medication if suitable, or be referred to another service if needed
- Rapid or weak pulse
This consultation usually takes just a few minutes and ensures the treatment is safe and appropriate for you.
