Impetigo & Infected Eczema Treatment – Redwood Pharmacy

Impetigo and infected eczema are common bacterial skin infections that can cause discomfort and spread quickly if left untreated. What Is Impetigo?

Impetigo is a highly contagious skin infection caused by Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus bacteria. It typically affects the face (especially around the nose and mouth), arms, and legs, and is most common in children but can occur in adults.

Symptoms include:

  • Red sores that quickly burst and form a golden-yellow crust
  • Itchy or sore patches
  • Blistering in some cases (bullous impetigo)
  • Spreading rash in clusters
Impetigo is very contagious, particularly in households, nurseries, and schools.

What Is Infected Eczema?

Sometimes eczema-affected skin can become secondarily infected with bacteria. This may happen after scratching or when the skin barrier is broken.

Signs of infected eczema include:

  • Increased redness or swelling
  • Pus or yellow crusting
  • Oozing or weeping skin
  • Feeling unwell or having a fever in severe cases

Treatment with Fucidin Cream (Fusidic Acid 2%)

Fucidin cream is a topical antibiotic used to treat mild to moderate bacterial skin infections such as impetigo or infected eczema.

How it works:

  • Stops the growth of bacteria
  • Reduces redness, swelling, and crusting
  • Helps speed up healing of the infected area

How to use:

  • Apply a thin layer 3–4 times daily to the affected area
  • Duration: Usually used for 5 to 7 days
  • Avoid contact with eyes and do not apply inside the nose or mouth
  • Always wash hands before and after application

Our pharmacist will guide you on proper usage and whether a combination with other treatments (e.g. emollients or antiseptics) is needed.

Who Can Use Fucidin Cream?

Fucidin cream is generally safe for:
  • Children and adults
  • Mild to moderate impetigo or infected eczema
  • Short-term use under pharmacist supervision
Not suitable for:
  • Deep or widespread infections
  • Broken skin with systemic symptoms (fever, swelling, pain)
  • Long-term use due to antibiotic resistance risk
