How to read a blood report
1. Reference ranges aren’t personalised
They reflect population averages. Being “in range” doesn’t always mean “optimal for you”.
2. Trends matter more than single results
One-off changes are common. Repeated patterns tell the real story.
3. Context changes numbers
Exercise, illness, hydration, fasting, supplements, and timing all affect results.
4. Next steps are usually simple
Often it’s: repeat → add a targeted test → review symptoms → decide calmly.

Example 1: A hormone pattern seen during the menopause transition
What the results showed (simplified):

How clinicians usually interpret this pattern:

How clinicians usually interpret this pattern:
This combination can have multiple explanations. A raised MCV may be associated with vitamin B12 or folate status, thyroid function, medication effects, alcohol intake, or recovery after illness. Mild reductions in white cells or neutrophils can be temporary — for example after viral infections — but patterns over time are more informative than a single result. AST can rise for non-liver reasons, including muscle activity or recent exercise.
Why this matters:
Looking at one marker in isolation can be misleading. The pattern across blood count, nutrients, and enzymes often provides better insight.

Uric acid levels are influenced by genetics, hydration, diet, kidney handling, and certain medications. An elevated result does not automatically indicate gout or disease, but it may increase risk in susceptible individuals. Trace findings on urine dipsticks can occur for benign reasons and are often interpreted alongside symptoms and repeat testing.
Why this matters:
An isolated raised marker doesn’t necessarily mean pathology — but persistent patterns or symptoms warrant structured follow-up.
