What Is Malaria?

Malaria is caused by parasites transmitted through the bites of infected mosquitoes. It can lead to:
  • High fever and chills
  • Muscle aches and fatigue
  • Digestive upset
  • Seizures and confusion
  • Organ failure (if untreated)

There’s no vaccine for malaria — the best protection is a combination of antimalarial tablets and bite prevention measures.

High-Risk Destinations

Malaria is found in over 100 countries, especially:
  • West & East Africa
  • South & Southeast Asia
  • Central and South America (including the Amazon region)
  • Parts of the Caribbean and Pacific
The P. falciparum and P. vivax parasites pose the highest risk — particularly in Africa and Asia.

Which Antimalarial Is Right for You?

We’ll guide you based on:
  • Your destination(s)
  • Length and type of travel (e.g., rural vs urban, backpacking vs resort)
  • Your medical history and tolerance for side effects
  • Personal preferences (daily vs weekly tablets)

We commonly supply:

Malarone (Atovaquone/Proguanil)

  • Effective worldwide, including resistant areas
  • Start 2 days before travel, take daily, and continue for 7 days after return
  • Well tolerated
  • Common side effects: Nausea, headache, stomach upset, vivid dreams, rash

How Do Malaria Tablets Work?

Malaria tablets work by:
  • Preventing the parasite from multiplying in the red blood cells
  • Or blocking its development in the liver

It’s crucial to complete the full course, even after you’ve returned home — stopping early could still result in infection.

Don't Forget Insect Bite Protection

Medication is essential, but you should also:
  • Use insect repellent with at least 50% DEET
  • Sleep under a mosquito net, especially in rural areas
  • Wear long sleeves and trousers after dusk
  • Stay in accommodation with air-con or screened windows

Know the Symptoms

Even with antimalarials, malaria is still possible. If you experience flu-like symptoms during or after your trip (up to 1 year), seek medical help immediately.
