- Swelling of the lips, tongue, throat, or face
- Hives, flushing, or itchy skin
- Dizziness or collapse
- Abdominal pain or vomiting (especially in children)
- Rapid or weak pulse
If you suspect someone is experiencing anaphylaxis, administer adrenaline immediately and call 999. Do not wait.
Adrenaline Auto-Injector Dosages by Age
Correct dosing is critical to ensure effective emergency response:
- Children under 6 years: 150 micrograms (e.g. Epipen Jr or Jext 150)
- Children aged 6–12 years: 300 micrograms
- Adults and children over 12 years: 500 micrograms
A second dose may be required if symptoms persist after 5–15 minutes and emergency services have not yet arrived.
Who Needs an Adrenaline Auto-Injector?
An adrenaline auto-injector may be prescribed or recommended for individuals with a history of:
- Severe food allergies (e.g. nuts, shellfish, eggs)
- Insect sting allergies (e.g. bees or wasps)
- Drug allergies
- Latex allergy
- Idiopathic anaphylaxis (unknown cause)
